5 december är det Internationella volontärsdagen! Därför har vi frågat Johanna, Linnea och Sara om dom kan dela med sig av sina upplevelser som volontärer!
What inspired you to become a volunteer?
Johanna: I have always wanted to go abroad and volunteer after finishing school. It’s not just an opportunity to help others, but also a chance to grow as a person, gain valuable experiences, and build lifelong connections
Linnea: Having graduated just this summer, I knew I wanted to spend a year making a positive impact through helping and doing something social but also to gain orientation. Volunteering seemed like the perfect way to combine both of these goals—making a difference in people's lives while also learning, growing, and exploring different paths.
Sara: When I graduated, I never planned on volunteering. It wasn’t something I had thought about for the future. But then, by chance, I came across this amazing opportunity, and something about it just felt right. The curiosity to try something new and the desire to be independent really pushed me to go for it. I wanted to do something I cared about, meet incredible people, and experience a new country and culture. Looking back, it was one of the best choices I’ve ever made, and it has brought so much joy and growth into my life.
What are the most memorable experiences you’ve had this far during your volunteering?
Johanna: That’s a tough question because, over the past few months, I’ve been fortunate to have so many wonderful experiences. However, I would say the highlights have been all the fun activities we organized in schools and the amazing connections I made during the on-arrival training in Stockholm.
Linnea: First of all, there have been so so many, this time is so intense and rich! But I think I just have to name the week we spend in stockholm for our on/arrival training, where we got to meet other volunteers, have interesting workshops and also explore the city.
Sara: During my three months of volunteering, I had so many unforgettable experiences, but if I had to choose just one, it would be the night I saw the Northern Lights with my roommates. The beauty of the lights was breathtaking, but what made that evening even more special was the way it brought us together. It was a perfect moment of connection, laughter, and sharing something magical with people I had come to care about deeply. That night will always stay with me, not just for the stunning lights, but for the bond it created between us.
How has your volunteering impacted you and those around you?
Johanna: I’ve already noticed that this experience has had a big impact on me—in the best way possible. During my time here, I’ve learned so much about myself and discovered how much I value being a volunteer. It’s been incredible to experience this country and its culture while living here for a year.
Linnea: Volunteering has most definitly already had a big impact on me— and that after only three months! I have become more independent and can better communicate needs and boundaries, which has also made a noticeable difference in my interactions with others. For example, my confidence has been steadily growing!
Sara: Of course, volunteering has had an impact on those around me as well. My family, for instance, feels relieved knowing that I’m in a safe and supportive environment, which brings them peace of mind. My friends, on the other hand, have been inspired by my experience. They’ve seen how much I've grown and now many of them are excited to step out of their comfort zones and explore the idea of volunteering abroad too. It’s not just about the work I’m doing, but the way it’s sparked a desire in others to try something new, take risks, and make a positive impact. It’s amazing to see how one decision can influence those around you in such a meaningful way.
What challenges have you faced as a volunteer, and how have you overcome them?
Johanna: Of course, leaving your home country and being away from friends and family can be tough at times. However, with FaceTime, it’s much easier to stay connected. Plus, being able to go back home for Christmas or other occasions really helps. Naturally, living away from home for the first time can bring challenges and difficulties, but there’s always a solution and through these experiences and mistakes, you learn and grow so much.
Linnea: The first and probably most obvious one would be homesickness for me. Here it helps me to speak, eather on calls with friends and family but also my roommates (who may feel very similar).
Sara: Of course, volunteering is an amazing opportunity and experience, but like everything in life, it comes with its challenges. For me, one of the biggest obstacles has been the language barrier. Even though I'm lucky that most people in Sweden speak excellent English, there are still times when it’s difficult to express myself fully in a language that's not my own, especially when I'm not feeling very confident. It’s a challenge I’m still working on, but I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by kind, supportive people who never make me feel judged or uncomfortable. Their encouragement has made all the difference and helped me push through these moments.
What would you say to someone considering becoming a volunteer?
Johanna: I would say: Go for it! Coming here was the best decision I’ve ever made, and I don’t regret it at all. I already know that this year will be filled with amazing stories and experiences that will always hold a special place in my heart.
Linnea: Absolutely do it! Volunteering is such a rewarding way to give back, learn new skills, and experience a new culture. It’s also so important to grow personally and connect with others.
Sara: If you're thinking about becoming a volunteer, I would definitely say, just do it. It’s an incredible experience, especially when you're young. Volunteering not only helps you grow personally, boosting your independence, resilience, and open-mindedness but also gives you valuable skills that can be applied to your career, like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. It’s also a chance to step out of your comfort zone, try new things, and meet amazing people from all over the world. You’ll form deep connections and make memories that will stay with you forever. Plus, volunteering gives you the opportunity to discover a new country and culture, expanding your perspective in ways you can't experience otherwise. And let’s not forget the rewarding feeling of knowing you’re helping a community. It’s a powerful experience that makes you feel useful, valued, and connected to something bigger than yourself. Volunteering truly is a life-changing opportunity.
